The Veterans Council of Hillsborough County, Inc. will hold a Korean War Memorial Dedication at the Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. Highway 301 North in Tampa at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26. The memorial will honor service members in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard who made the ultimate sacrifice during this conflict.
The event will be hosted by the Korean War Veterans Association, Lt. Baldomero Lopez, MOH Chapter 175 and speeches from Korean War survivors, Dr. Kimi Springsteen and Dr. Sun kyun Shin, recounting their experience during the war. The 1226 Riverview detachment of the Marine Corps League will salute the fallen soldiers with a rifle salute and playing of taps.
The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when soldiers from the Soviet-backed North Korean People's Army attempted to invade American-backed South Korean territory. After three years of conflict, a temporary armistice was signed that still holds to this day. During the conflict, 37,576 American soldiers were killed in action; 103,236 American soldiers were wounded; and 8,099 are still missing in action.
